Sitting inside a large mountain cave, the Valadier temple cuts a striking neoclassical silhouette against the rough hewn edges of the surrounding natural cave walls. Since at least the X century the local population has been hiding out from attacks from enemy tribes in the cave in which the temple now sits. Remains of these earlier uses of the cave were uncovered when the temple was built in 1828 at the behest of the reigning pope. Also known as the "Refuge of sinners", the temple features an ornate design, with a domed roof covering an octagonal structure symbolizing Jesus' resurrection. The interior originally held a marble Madonna and Child sculpted by Antonio Canova, later moved to a local museum and a replica was installed in its place.
